The Daily Telegraph's Football Correspondent, Henry Winter, on Fulham Manager Chris Coleman...

Henry Winter's insightful article on Cookie from last Saturday's Telegraph was such a good piece we've gained permission from the Daily Telegraph to share it with you....

Surveying Chris Coleman's successful first season as a manager, it is natural to assume that part of his determination stems from the abrupt and brutal way his playing career ended, wrecked by that horrific car crash that almost claimed the likeable Welshman's life.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Sven-Goran Eriksson all admit disappointments in their playing days fuel the fire of their second career, a notion Coleman comprehends, though he was a more accomplished footballer than those three.

"I had a good career but not glittering," said the former Swansea, Crystal Palace, Blackburn, Fulham and Wales defender whose well-organised Fulham team leap over the garden fence this afternoon to test Chelsea's ambition.

"I wasn't winning Premierships, FA Cups or 80 caps. I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't crashed that car that blasted night. I hadn't thought about management. It was only when I was going through rehabilitation I thought, 'I may not play again. Football is the love of my life so try coaching'.

"I didn't get the adrenalin rush as a coach but when I got the caretaker's job here, it was like someone had woken me up. The buzz was back. I feel the same as when I made my debut for Swansea at 16 - I am absolutely flying. I wake up every Saturday morning and feel butterflies, all excited, like a kid. I still kick every ball, make every tackle in my head."

Now 33, Coleman the manager has been shaped by playing under strong characters. "Terry Yorath turned me into a man. I was 16 when he put me in the Swansea first team.
He really hammered home about being professional, acting like a man.

"At Palace, Alan Smith was like Terry. He likes players to be men, to stand up in the dressing room and say what's on their mind. Steve Coppell was much more of a thinker; Steve would be in a room with 10 people, not say anything, leave the room and tell you everything everyone has said.

"I joined a Palace team with Ian Wright, Mark Bright, Andy Gray and Geoff Thomas, all really strong characters who took me on to the next step. You had to stand up and say your piece. I saw people bullied, not physically, but mentally. I learnt a lot. I loved Palace to death.

"I was really nervous going to Blackburn because of Kenny Dalglish. Not because when I had seen him on TV he looked like 'Don't mess with me', but because it was Kenny Dalglish. As soon as I arrived, he was fantastic. Kenny's humour is so sharp.

"If you try to get in an argument with Kenny, even tongue in cheek, he will rip you apart! In the five-a-side, he was very competitive. He was upstairs at the time; Ray Harford was in charge. Ray was one of the best coaches I have ever worked with. Sadly, I didn't do the business at Blackburn."

Fulham beckoned and a certain Kevin Keegan. "Of all the managers, I probably enjoyed playing for Kevin most. He would make you feel 10ft tall and also make you feel silly. The public think Kevin is a really nice guy, that he is the people's man, and he is.

"But he is also ruthless and he will cut you off at the knees if you are not doing the business. Lee Clark said Kevin was the same at Newcastle. I was really disappointed when he left for England."

When the team fell apart under Jean Tigana, Fulham turned to the popular Coleman, who had been assisting with coaching after his accident. "There were splits all over the place, cliques, whispering in the corridors. I would get on the bus and the first table would be French players, the second table would be the English boys.

"Jean had had players training mornings and afternoons; fitness-wise we were great but mentally we were drained. I cut the training down to once a day. Mine is a more British-style management: club days, get the lads together.

"Gone are the days when you can say, 'Let's meet down the pub after training and have a good slap-up steak and chips and a pint'. But we did go out for a meal, have a glass of wine and then go home. It was just a case of getting them talking to each other again."
Rifts healed by Coleman's strength of personality, Fulham revived well. Coleman moved out the weak-hearted, like Steve Marlet (loaned to Marseilles), and assisted by Steve Kean - "a big bearing on our success" - moulded the players into an intelligent, counter-attacking 4-5-1 unit.

"I was looking for an instruction guide to management!" Coleman smiled. "I didn't call any managers. The odds were on me to get the sack so I thought I might as well do it my way. Loads of people offered advice; Alex Ferguson was the first one. He said, 'It's a hard job, good luck, and how much do you want for Louis Saha?' "

Ah, Saha. "When I look back, I think, 'For God's sake, why did I say Saha would leave over my dead body'. Some people said to me, 'Very clever, you pushed Saha's price up'. But I was genuinely absolutely gutted when he went. I am not so naive now. When the big boys come calling, if they want someone bad enough, it's very hard to stop them."
The big boys might want him one day. "If that happens, I hope I am man enough to say, 'No I am not going'. I love it here. I am building for the future at Fulham"

Welsh managers are in vogue. "People in Britain are too quick to say 'Let's go and get a manager from abroad' when there are very good managers in this country. Of the young managers, Mark Hughes has impressed me the most. I played once under him for Wales.
"He doesn't throw sandwiches, rant or rave. He's very quiet, very serious, but scary. He was tough as nails as a player and, as a manager, he has this presence where you think, 'I am not going to mess with him'. He never needed to raise his voice because you had such respect for him, you did whatever he asked. It is going to be hard for Wales to hold on to him."

Hughes and Coleman are similar: tough, intelligent, articulate managers with a sense of perspective on their crafts. "I was talking yesterday to a good mate of mine whose friend had just got through an illness. My mate asked him what he had learnt.

He said, 'Two things. Firstly, I am not going to worry about the small things any more, and secondly, they are all small things'. I thought that was great. Football decisions can't compare to what I went through on that blasted night." From sad origins, Coleman's second career promises much.

Mi?
Akkor ez most számít egynek?
Bocs, ha sok hülyeséget kérdeztem egyszerre:)

Aha, szeretem Colemant:)

EVERTON striker Tomasz Radzinski is a ?2million target for Fulham's talent-hunting boss Chris Coleman.

Canadian Radzinski has stalled on a new contract at Goodison and now Fulham have made the first official move to take him away.

Coleman has made contact with Everton to inform them of his interest and has made an offer of cash up front plus instalments.

Fulham have money for new forwards since the sale of Louis Saha to Manchester United and Coleman has turned his attention to pacey and skilful Radzinski.

Ambitious Fulham hope they can tie up the deal quickly and seal Radzinski's signature ahead of rival Premiership interest from Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth.

Radzinski could be one of several players leaving Everton this summer as boss David Moyes struggles to shake up his squad on a limited budget.............blabla.............

Coleman segít?jének azonban méltánytalan szerz?déstervezetet kínált a Fulham vezet?sége, amin kollégája próbál segíteni.
